EFCO, a Pella Company, is honored to recognize the outstanding sustainable efforts of Central College in Pella, Iowa. EFCO congratulates them for achieving the USGBC's LEED Platinum level certification. The design efforts of the architectural firm RDG Planning & Design have come together with a myriad of green products and construction disciplines used by The Weitz Company to create a truly inspiring educational environment.

The use of EFCO energy efficient window and curtain wall products in the building envelope allowed for the downsizing of the heating and cooling system, which provides over 20% reduction in energy costs. In addition to the energy efficient design of the building’s skin, the use of an automated daylight harvesting system, which dims or switches off interior lighting when daylight is available, helps reduce energy costs. This is part of a sophisticated building automation communication system which alerts the occupants when the conditions are satisfactory to open or close windows to maximize the buildings energy efficiency.

Several innovative and cutting edge materials were installed to gain a high level of recycled content use in the building. EFCO supplied recycled aluminum, which contains 57.5% post-consumer and 23.5% pre-consumer recycled content, which helped gain both points available in this area.

The overall use of fenestration in the building’s design provides a generous amount of daylight. This creative and functional use of windows also provides a connection to the outdoors as over 90% of the building’s interior space has views to the exterior.
